Ram Navmi Pooja & Havan

Ram Navmi Pooja & Havan

Ram Navami is one of the auspicious festivals in Hindu Religion. It is celebrated to mark the birth of Lord Ram– seventh avatar of God Vishnu. It is celebrated on the ninth day of Chaitra Navratri during the month of March/April.

Ram Navmi Rituals

Devotees of Lord Rama observe a day-long fast on this auspicious day. The fast begins in the morning before sunrise and extends till the sunrise of next day. Devotees also worship Lord Rama by listening or reciting the epic Ramayana.

On Ram Navami, a large number of devotees visit temples, recite holy texts from Ramayana, perform pooja and havan, observe fast and take part in Bhajan or Kirtan. Devotees even bring miniature idols of Lord Ram, bathe and dress and place them on a cradle. A diya (lamp) is lit to worship God and kheer is offered as prasad to please God.

Nav kanya (Nine girls) are invited at home for Kanya Pujan and served halwa-puri for Bhojan. It is believed that inviting little girls for Kanya Bhojan on auspicious occasions help uplift all the sins.

Significance of Ram Navmi

Ramnavmi signifies the victory of good over evil. It also depicts the establishment of Dharma to beat Adharma. Devotees begin Ramnavmi by offering Jal (water) to Lord Surya (Sun) to get his blessings. According to mythology, Surya Devta is an ancestor of Lord Rama.

History of Ram Navami

Ram Navami is celebrated to honour Ram Avatar of Lord Vishu which is also known as Maryada Purshottam. He was born in Ayodhya to Kaushalya and Dasrath in Treta Yuga. History describes how Dashrath and his three queens– Sumitra, Kaikeyi and Kaushalya performed Yagna on the advice of Vashisth Rishi when none of them were able to give birth to the next ruler of Ayodhya.

After a yagna was performed, Lord Yagna gave them Kheer as a blessing. The queens soon gave birth to beautiful sons. While Kaushalya gave birth to Rama, Sumitra and Kaikeyi gave birth to Laxman, Bharat and Shatrughan.

Lord Rama gave up his throne because of his father’s promise to Kaikeyi. He went to the forest for 14 years. Later he became the king after returning from the exile.
